NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, McGraw-Hill Education and the Kellogg Institute at the National Center for Developmental Education announced the recipients of the first-ever McGraw-Hill/Kellogg Developmental Educator Scholarships, which are designed to honor two outstanding instructors dedicated to preparing students for college-level coursework. McGraw-Hill Education and the Kellogg Institute will present the Emerging Leader scholarship to Karen Lemke, director of College Readiness and Developmental Education at Adams State College, and the Adjunct Faculty scholarship to Mary Ann Saurino, at Inver Hills Community College, for their commitment to innovation in developmental education. Lemke and Saurino will receive full scholarships to the 2012 Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators, the nation's longest running advanced training program for developmental educators.

This scholarship program addresses a critical need in our educational system: providing outstanding professional development opportunities to train educators to combat the growing rate of underprepared students in need of developmental education who are entering colleges across the country. In fact, 63 percent of students at two-year colleges and 40 percent at four-year institutions are in need of remediation nationally - and statistics show that those who take remedial courses are more likely to drop out.

The McGraw-Hill Kellogg Developmental Educator Scholarships are part of McGraw-Hill Education's growing commitment to advancing the field of developmental education. The corporation is working to close the remediation gap and increase college student's opportunities to excel and graduate through the use of the latest adaptive learning technologies to accelerate and personalize learning for each student.

McGraw-Hill and the Kellogg Institute recognized Karen Lemke as the 2012 McGraw-Hill Emerging Leader for her involvement in developmental education that extends beyond the classroom. Lemke plays an instrumental role in developing Adams State's Student Success Center and acquiring learning technology to support developmental education. Mary Ann Saurino was selected as the recipient of the McGraw-Hill Adjunct Faculty Scholarship for her commitment to helping her students achieve their full potential, and her focus on enhancing her own professional development.

"There is no question that we need to improve developmental education in colleges and universities across the nation," said Beth Mejia, executive director of developmental education at McGraw-Hill Education. "By supporting the important work of educators like Karen and Mary Ann who are leading this charge, we can better prepare today's students for the college classroom, and ensure higher graduation rates and better workforce readiness."

The McGraw-Hill Kellogg Developmental Educator Scholarships will be presented to Lemke and Saurino at the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) 2012 conference today in Orlando, Fla.
