McGraw-Hill Research Foundation's Summit Tackles Critical Issues Facing Education

NEW YORK, Sept. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Improving student achievement across this country is imperative to the development of a skilled workforce and our economic growth. Two of the nation's leading educators, Alberto Carvalho and Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, know what it takes to make the kind of lasting changes needed to ensure academic success in K-12 and higher education respectively - true innovation, strong leadership and extensive collaboration.

Carvalho, superintendent, Miami-Dade County Schools, and Hrabowski, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will be the featured speakers at The McGraw-Hill Research Foundation's Third Annual Innovation in Education Summit on Sept. 28 at The McGraw-Hill Companies' corporate headquarters, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. During the event, thought leaders representing education, technology, government and other constituencies will gather during the half-day summit to discuss some of the most critical issues facing policymakers, administrators, teachers, students and parents.

Acknowledged as a leader in school reform, Carvalho will discuss his experiences successfully changing the culture of the Miami-Dade district and advancing a range of initiatives that have contributed to student success in his presentation, "Education Innovation - From the Possible to the Inevitable." Carvalho documents his work in Miami-Dade in a new policy paper to be released by The McGraw-Hill Research Foundation, "Strategies for Rescuing Failing Public Schools: How Leaders Create a Culture of Success," which he co-authored with Dr. Steven L. Paine, senior advisor, The McGraw-Hill Research Foundation. The policy paper will be released on Sept. 28.

Hrabowski, a recognized leader in post-secondary science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, will talk about innovative methods his university has employed to increase STEM achievement, particularly among minority groups in his presentation, "Institutional Change in Higher Education: Innovation and Collaboration." This topic is also presented in a new policy paper authored by Hrabowski and recently released by The McGraw-Hill Research Foundation.

Each presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring an esteemed group of thought leaders in education and technology. The first panel will focus on the role innovation plays in preparing students for college and careers. The second panel will discuss how to ensure that K-16 digital solutions drive student achievement and how to ensure solutions are scalable.
