Anderson County, Ky. Kindergarten Classes Using McGraw-Hill's Everyday Mathematics® Experience Significant Jump in National Math Scores

In Anderson County's Early Childhood Center, where they use McGraw-Hill's Everyday Mathematics® program, kindergarteners have shown dramatic improvement in math achievement on standardized tests. Entering the 2009-2010 school year, these kindergarten students (over 300 students in all) placed in the 9th percentile nationally in math on the Northwest Evaluation Association's Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. By the end of the school year, the students' mean math score catapulted to the 80th percentile. Additionally, 28 percent of these same students left kindergarten at least one grade level ahead in math.

McGraw-Hill's Everyday Mathematics program is a structured, rigorous and research-based PreK-6 curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project that helps students learn mathematical reasoning and develop strong math skills. The program's hands-on approach, which focuses on using a student's own experiences, real-life examples and games, teaches basic skills as well as conceptual thinking. It is the nation's most popular elementary math program, used by more than 4 million students nationwide.

"I've never seen measured improvement like this in mathematics in our district - and Everyday Mathematics has played a significant role in that improvement," said Suzanne Farmer, a kindergarten math intervention teacher with Anderson County Schools. "Everyday Mathematics actively engages students as they learn, which is so important for young minds, and it has resulted in solid performance and progress in math for our students."

This is the first year that Anderson County has used the MAP assessment at the beginning of the school year. Farmer attributes much of the gain in test scores to the teachers instructing Everyday Mathematics with fidelity. "This year we worked to get everyone to trust and support curriculum maps, district assessments and a pacing guide in line with the Everyday Mathematics program."
