"The traditional publishing model is shifting to an information based business model." That was a key takeaway offered by Peter C. Davis, president of McGraw-Hill Education, during his panel presentation on the future of book publishing at Big Money's Untethered Conference, which took place in New York on June 17. The conference brought together business and technology leaders who are shaping the next generation of resources for the evolving education market.

Mr. Davis explained, "We are making content more usable and parsable so it can be targeted to create an individualized and personalized learning experience for students and produce desired learning outcomes. We need to stop thinking of e-books as transformative. They are not. Adaptive and interactive learning tools are where education needs to go and where the real opportunity lies. Bring on this new world. The quicker it happens the more exciting it is for us."

Also during the conference, Mr. Davis shared some of McGraw-Hill Education's digital business strategies, emerging applications and plans for more digital content on mobile devices. Currently, the company offers all of its major K-12 programs digitally, and 95 percent of its current higher education titles digitally. In addition, the company offers more than 100 educational apps and 5,000 digital titles through its professional and reference group.

Mr. Davis joined The McGraw-Hill Companies in 2006 as executive vice president of Global Strategy. Currently, as president of McGraw-Hill Education, responsible for leading one of the world's top educational publishers, serving teachers and students across virtually every aspect of the growing global education market from Pre-K through professional learning. He also is leading McGraw-Hill Education's efforts to develop effective digital learning platforms and tools that are customized to the needs of each student and designed to generate positive learning outcomes at virtually every level of education.

He is on the board of directors of the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute Foundation for Educational Leadership and Policy, and he is a member of the President's Policy Council of the Alliance for Excellent Education. Mr. Davis holds a bachelor's degree from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, N.J., where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He earned his master's degree in business administration from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University.
