McGraw-Hill Education's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Learning Solutions Center today announced that Page Keeley, senior program director at the Maine Mathematics and Science Association, will be joining as a contributing author for K-12 science. An active member of the science education community for over 25 years, Ms. Keeley brings a wealth of knowledge in K-12 and higher education, including expertise in professional development for teachers, formative assessment, leadership development, and tools and resources that connect standards and curriculum to research on learning.
In addition, Ms. Keeley brings strong experience in developing effective assessment strategies, including formative assessment probes that uncover students' ideas and ways of reasoning about common science topics, which can serve as an effective tool to help teachers build a bridge between students' initial ideas and scientific ones. Ms. Keeley has written extensively on the topic, including Science Formative Assessments: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning.
"Page's leadership and experience will be invaluable as we build on McGraw-Hill's high-quality K-12 science content and offerings and further expand our commitment to STEM education," said Arthur Block, senior vice president of the McGraw-Hill School Education Group's STEM Learning Solutions Center.
Ms. Keeley, the retiring president of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), is well known for her leadership and dedication to quality science instruction and learning. She began her career working as a research assistant at the Jackson Laboratory of Mammalian Genetics, and eventually left to become a teacher. She taught science for 15 years at the middle and high school levels, served as a science literacy leader for the Project 2061 Professional Development Program, helping educators use Project 2061's science literacy resources to improve curricula, instruction, and assessment, and worked as an adjunct instructor at the University of Maine.
Since 1996, Ms. Keeley has been employed at the Maine Mathematics and Science Association, focusing on program design, leadership, professional development, and development of publications that link state and national standards to research on learning.
Ms. Keeley earned a bachelor's degree in life science, with a pre-veterinary concentration, from the University of New Hampshire and a master's degree in science education from the University of Maine, and is beginning her doctorate in science education in the fall.
