CTB/McGraw-Hill, a leading provider of adult education and PreK - 12 assessment solutions, today announced that its TABE® (Tests of Adult Basic Education) family of assessments for adult learners has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education's National Reporting System (NRS) for Adult Education. With this authorization, the TABE assessments are approved for seven years beginning on February 1, 2010, the Federal Register notification date.
The NRS approval applies to TABE Forms 9&10, and TABE CLAS-E™ (TABE Complete Language Assessment System - English™), and demonstrates that the assessments have passed stringent federal accountability standards for learner outcomes. With NRS approval, TABE assessments can be used by any state education agency that receives federal funding though the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
"This reauthorization of the TABE assessments ensures that adult education agencies nationwide will continue to have access to reliable and complete information about their adult students' abilities, helping guide them on paths to success," said Ellen Haley, president of CTB/McGraw-Hill. "These assessments are based on the same philosophies found in the best adult education programs. The tests feature items that clearly focus on skills adult students need to successfully pursue their educational and professional goals."
TABE is the most widely used basic skills test for adults on the market. TABE 9&10 assesses basic reading, mathematics, and language skills, as well as optional spelling, vocabulary and language mechanics tests. The assessment yields objective mastery information for basic skills, and provides percentile, scale scores, and grade equivalent scores.
TABE CLAS-E accommodates all English proficiency levels to accurately measure students' reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. The assessment is aligned to key national and international education standards and enables a seamless integration with the overall TABE assessments.
