Douglas Fisher, Ph.D. Will Present Critical Insights to National Council for Teachers of English

A top Literature program consultant with McGraw-Hill School Education Group, the leading provider of print and digital educational materials for Grades PreK-12, will serve on a panel of experts discussing English Language Learners at the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sunday, November 22, 2009.

Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., senior consultant for McGraw-Hill's Glencoe Literature: Texas Treasures, and other leading experts will present "Teaching English Learners with the Brain in Mind." The panel will show teachers how research in neuroscience, English language development, and learning is applied to instruction for adolescent English Language Learners. The speakers will describe the latest findings in brain research regarding first-and-second-language acquisition and how this relates to the role of teacher modeling and classroom discourse.

Dr. Fisher has been an early intervention specialist, language development specialist, and teacher of high school English, writing, and literacy development. Dr. Fisher is currently a Professor of Language and Literacy Development at San Diego State University and is Co-Director of the Center for the Advancement of Reading for the California State University System.
