How has business technology education changed since the dot-com era? How are today's business students and tomorrow's business leaders taught about the relationship between business and technology? The recently published second edition of Business Driven Information Systems (McGraw-Hill) applies a "business-first" approach to teaching the introductory MIS course. Due to the pervasive nature of technology, all business students benefit from understanding the tight correlation between technology and business success. When students understand the importance of technology in all areas of business they realize the value and direct impact this course has on their future careers. Business Driven Information Systems is a fully customizable teaching tool enabling professors to craft the course that best connects with their business students.

"McGraw-Hill is pleased to publish the second edition of Business Driven Information Systems," said Kevin Kane, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education's Business & Economics Group. "The unique approach of the first edition provided a substantial improvement to the way instructors teach and students learn this material. The effort put forth by the authors in the second edition to add new material, case studies, integrated technology, and real-world examples demonstrates a strong commitment to further improve the learning experience for students, and also enable instructors to effectively connect their MIS course to the business world that lies beyond the classroom."

Author-developed and created supplemental material is one of the biggest benefits of Business Driven Information Systems and vastly unique in this industry as many authors choose to outsource the production of supplemental materials. Along with traditional textbook supplements such as testbanks, PowerPoints, and Instructor Manuals, Business Driven Information Systems also offers the MISForum and The Broadway Cafe Cohesion Case. The MISForum is a collaborative website where the authors are continuously posting supplemental materials to assist with lecture ideas, case updates, technology news, current topics, video clips and much more. Faculty can visit the MISForum prior to a lecture to quickly gather innovative teaching ideas and thought-provoking classroom activities which significantly decreases course preparation time. The MISForum has over 400 MIS faculty from the U.S., Canada, and Australia and averages 10,000 hits per month. Another unique author created supplement is The Broadway Cafe Cohesion Case that tasks students with taking the intangible MIS concepts and applying them to a real business -- a coffee shop. Throughout the course the students own and operate The Broadway Cafe taking advantage of business practices discussed in the text to increase profits, decrease costs, and bring the cafe into the 21st century. Upon completion of the case, students will have performed a vast array of activities helping them gain an appreciation of how technology is deployed throughout a business by all of the different functional areas including:

-- Implement technology to gain a competitive advantage
-- Build ebusiness strategies for marketing, operations management, and
      supply chains
-- Create an online community for collaboration
-- Deploy wireless products for attracting customers
-- Apply CRM strategies to implement marketing campaigns that retain and
      reward customers
-- Encounter a number of different ethical and information security
      dilemmas
-- Use business intelligence to solve problems and set the strategic
      vision
-- Apply project management concepts for implementing technology
      solutions

Integrated themes such as security, ethics, business intelligence, green technology, and corporate social responsibility are presented throughout the text and connect the student to real-world decisions and strategies that are critical for business survival. "Since I started using Business Driven Information Systems in my Business Information Systems and Technology class, more than one thousand of my students have given me rave reviews for both the new content and design of my course," said Dr. Frederick A Rodammer, The Eli Broad College of Business, Michigan State University. "They really like the easy-to-grasp business approach to IT, the up-to-date real world cases and the comprehensive Broadway Cafe Cohesion Case, and I like the wealth of additional instructor resources and excellent teaching aids that assure my class will be a hit. In fact, my student ratings increased by over 25 percent after I adopted the Baltzan/Phillips textbook."

The textbook is authored by Paige Baltzan and Amy Phillips, who teach in the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver.
