Baldwin Park Unified School District, located in southern California, has adopted Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's reading and language arts program, California Treasures, and its parallel program, California Tesoros de leis ctura, for Grades K-6.
The district's adoption committee chose California Treasures and California Tesoros because the members felt the programs truly addressed the needs of their teachers and students. The committee conducted an in-depth review of Grades K-6 reading/language arts programs, focusing on assessment, universal access, and instructional planning and support.
"The California Treasures program provides the most thorough coverage of the state content standards with specific instructional strategies," says Arturo Ortega, Baldwin Park USD assistant superintendent for Student Achievement Grades K-6. "The assessments align more to state tests, the instructional methods clearly link to specific standards, and the program provides universal access to a variety of resources appropriate to varying student levels."
The Baldwin Park adoption committee determined the program's writing portion strongly supports all students, including ELL students and struggling readers. The district also noted the program stood out in other areas such as:
-- Superior scaffolding, directly relating to the type of reading students are learning -- Exceptional academic language -- Engaging stories -- Easy to navigate Teacher Edition -- Consistent and ongoing vocabulary development
Developed to address California standards, California Treasures is a comprehensive reading and language arts program that includes differentiated instruction, an English language development program, writing instruction, and classroom management resources.
California Treasures is written specifically to follow the state's revised English language arts standards and incorporates an English language development (ELD) component to assist students transitioning from Spanish with the parallel California Tesoros de lectura program.
