A recent study found that college students, on average, complete less than 50% of the reading assigned to them in their courses. Instructors face an ever-present challenge of selecting course content that will not only capture the attention of their students but also engage them in the learning process. Economics: The Basics (McGraw-Hill), by Michael Mandel, chief economist at BusinessWeek magazine, was developed with these goals in mind.
Written in a modern journalistic style, Economics: The Basics draws upon Mandel's extensive experience as BusinessWeek's chief economist and delivers the basics of economics instruction in the context of real-world economic literacy. Up-to-date examples and accessible math make the material more approachable and attractive to students, and the engaging design of the book feels more like a magazine than a textbook, which motivates students to read.
"Not everyone is going to be an economics major, but everyone does need to know about economics," says Mandel. "In clear, understandable language, I made sure that Economics: The Basics connects economic ideas to the news events today that directly affect students. From hair salons to the Internet, from healthcare to Johnny Depp, the link between economics and everyday life can inspire students who might otherwise find the subject too abstract."
The Basics is one of the first books on the market to be developed specifically for a one-term survey course. Unlike most books in this market that are simply watered-down versions of existing Principles texts, this content was written especially for the survey course, and designed for students who will not go on to take other economics courses. Economics: The Basics presents real-life data directly from such government sources as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau.
"Economics: The Basics is a new innovative text that provides students with basic economics knowledge they need and instructors with the relevant context they want to engage their students," said Kevin Kane, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education's Business and Economics Group. "Mandel's unique approach empowers students to not only succeed in this course but also to gain a deeper understanding of the forces that shape today's economy, knowledge that will serve them well far into the future."
Michael Mandel, chief economist at BusinessWeek, holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. After teaching at New York University's Stern School of Business, he moved to BusinessWeek in 1989. Since then, he has written about a wide range of topics, from the economics of crime to immigration, health care, technology, and the global economy. He has received several prestigious awards for economic and financial journalism and was named one of the top 100 business journalists of the 20th century. Economics: The Basics is Mandel's first solo textbook.
Economics: The Basics comes with an array of instructor and student tools to make teaching and learning easier. For more information, visit: http://www.mhhe.com/mandelbasics1e.
