The Providence Public School District in Providence, Rhode Island, has announced it plans to purchase four of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's 2010 high school math programs, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Advanced Mathematical Concepts: Precalculus with Applications, for the district's high schools.

Prior to selecting Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's programs, the district conducted a thorough review of curriculum from a variety of publishers, with the guidance of The Dana Center at the University of Texas, Austin, which supports Grades K-12 teachers and leaders working to implement high academic standards for all students.

Paula Shannon, director of K-12 Teaching and Learning for Providence Public School District, said that approximately 50 high school mathematics teachers in the district analyzed several research-based math programs and found that the Glencoe series best aligned to the Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations.

The Rhode Island district plans to implement staff development training for its teachers to effectively integrate the programs in Providence classrooms.

"As the district develops a core mathematics curriculum, it is imperative that we align the curriculum with research-based tools to support teachers in the delivery of rigorous mathematics instruction to all students," Shannon said. "We are excited about the adoption and our partnership with Glencoe."
