McGraw-Hill Higher Education has developed a new pre-composition course book that teaches the principles of writing while simultaneously focusing on environmental consciousness. A Writer's Workshop: Crafting Paragraphs, Building Essays, now in its 3rd edition in both print and digital formats, merges lessons in writing with a global, social issue.

With a printed textbook made from 10 percent post-consumer waste paper and soy-based ink, A Writer's Workshop: Crafting Paragraphs and Building Essays is as environmentally sound on the outside as it is within. This is the second part of a two-book developmental writing series aimed at engaging students with its environmental theme and uses a process-oriented, collaborative and conscientious approach to writing. In addition, the book explores why it is important to examine each writing skill and process and links lessons to future application in the classroom and beyond.

In the spirit of this commitment to conservation, The McGraw-Hill Companies is partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation, the million-member nonprofit conservation and education organization, to plant 60,000 trees in U.S. forests this year. In addition, the Writer's Workshop website will link to activities the Arbor Day Foundation is sponsoring across the country to encourage students to volunteer and to promote environmental awareness. Visitors can also keep track of how many trees have been planted and learn how they can help protect the environment.

"The largest American generation since the Baby Boomers, today's students will be the ones to lead the charge when it comes to sustaining our environment. In A Writer's Workshop, we've provided the basic tools to raise awareness around green living practices," said Steve Debow, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education's Humanities, Social Sciences and World Languages Group. "At the same time, this project motivates students to build on what they already know and to use their writing, reading and studying energies wisely."

"Conservation and Context" features are incorporated into A Writer's Workshop to remind students and instructors of how easy it is to be green through activities, facts and tips. For example, by encouraging students to try prewriting, drafting and revising their assignments on the computer, they can help decrease excess paper use.

Robert Brannan, author of A Writer's Workshop: Crafting Paragraphs, Building Essays, is a member of the Nature Conservancy, a global non-profit organization that aims to protect and preserve land worldwide. By appealing to the environmentally conscious student, Brannan has opened the door for future green books on all higher education subject areas.
