SRA Imagine It! reading and language arts programs for Grades Pre-K-6 offer an abundance of resources for Differentiating Instruction (http://www.imagineitreading.com/ENG_US/bp_wi_differen.php) to meet the needs of all learners.
Within the Imagine It! program, Universal Access means much more than just center activities that students rotate through. The comprehensive Teacher's Edition provides instructional suggestions for learners at four ability levels: Strategic, Benchmark, English Learner, and Advanced. And, Differentiated Instruction is carried through each part of the lesson: Preparing to Read, Reading and Responding, and Language Arts. It is thorough, integrated and easy-to-use differentiation at every step.
Imagine It! Differentiated Instruction is based on a solid and ongoing cycle of assessment -- Screen, Diagnose and Differentiate, Monitor Progress, and Measure Outcomes -- all designed to ensure students are consistently and positively developing their abilities and that no students fall between the cracks. Students receive instruction to meet their learning needs -- whether it is English Language Development (ELD), intervention, or challenge.
Imagine It! has many additional strategies and resources for Differentiated Instruction:
-- Workshop is small group instruction time. It is a regular part of language arts period when the teacher meets with small groups or individuals while the rest of the class works in small groups to review skills, practice fluency, engage in inquiry activities, continue on their writing or work on other related reading and writing activities. -- In every lesson there is a comprehensive Workshop Planner containing instructional ideas and activities as well as online and workbook resources. -- Workshop Kits provide a wealth of fun, grade-level appropriate manipulative materials like game boards, alphabet letters, sound/spelling cards, word cards and a Workshop Resource Book with ideas that teachers can use for hands-on activities to provide students with meaningful practice, reteach, and intervention opportunities. -- Leveled Readers are theme-based and address the different skill levels to help students build their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. -- Leveled Readers for Science and Social Studies and Curriculum Connections Kits incorporate cross-curricular content and support fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development. Activities at the end of each book engage students in hands-on learning about the theme. -- At each grade level, there is a Strategic Support Guide for Struggling Readers. Each guide contains additional lessons for pre-teaching or re-teaching key reading and writing concepts. There is instruction for each part of the lesson: Preparing to Read, Reading and Responding, and Language Arts. -- The English Learner Support Guide has focused support for ELD students. Each grade-level guide contains instructional activities for pre-teaching and re-teaching key reading and writing skills. Instruction addresses ELD students at the Beginning, Early Intermediate, Intermediate and Advanced Levels. English Learner Support Activities and the English Learner Photo Library reinforce learning. -- Intensive Vocabulary Kit (Grades K-3) contains additional vocabulary lessons at each grade level to increase the vocabulary knowledge of students requiring extra support and to help close the vocabulary gap. Each kit includes a Read-aloud Anthology, Teacher's Resource Book and Vocabulary Picture Cards. -- Reading Intervention Kit provides 90 strategic intervention lessons for skills in each of the five key technical domains of reading: phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The kit is intended for use with small groups of students needing additional instruction and practice in one or all of the technical domains.
"Each child enters the classroom at his or her own individual level, and teachers are faced with the challenge of identifying where each child stands and providing the level of instruction needed to move them forward. We understand that not every child learns the same way. They all come to the classroom with different backgrounds and experiences, yet teachers are expected to help them all pass state assessments," said Marsha Roit, Ed.D. and senior author of Imagine It! "When creating Imagine It! we made it a priority to include the highest level of Differentiating Instruction resources on the market."
About Imagine It!
Imagine It! is the result of 45 years of research and field study. It meets all of the elements recommended by the National Reading Panel: instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness, explicit phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program covers all daily reading, language arts, and writing curriculum requirements, while meeting all of the standards for science and social studies. Imagine It! fully integrates state-of-the-art technology tools to enhance learning.
There are three options within the Imagine It! series: Imagine It! is the core K-6 program, designed to meet California State Standards. Imagine It! English Language Development (ELD) is an expanded version of Imagine It! specifically designed for teachers with students whose primary language is not English. ¡Imaginalo! helps students develop Spanish literacy that can be used in combination with Imagine It! or alone.
The California editions of the Imagine It! series meet the California Criteria, Standards, and Framework, and were approved by the California State Board of Education for the 2008 Reading/Language Arts-English-Language Development adoption list.
The authors, who are researchers themselves, continue to update the program as new studies are published revealing the latest findings on effective instructional methods.
