Nashville Schools Adopt Glencoe's Social Studies Programs for Grades 6-12

Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools have adopted five social studies programs for Grades 6-12 from Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, a leading publisher of print and digital programs.

Todd Wigginton, the district's social studies supervisor, says the number one reason the district's textbook selection committee adopted Glencoe's social studies programs is because they are aligned to Tennessee state standards.

Students in the district speak more than 100 languages, including Spanish, Lao, Farsi, and Vietnamese. The Glencoe programs' online multi-language support provides every student access to learning by building a strong vocabulary and reading skills.

In addition to language inclusiveness, the Glencoe programs appealed to the selection committee because they make excellent use of primary sources in relaying history, Wigginton said.

"It makes it so much easier for students to understand a period of time in history if they see an actual document, like a journal entry from a Civil War soldier or a political cartoon about a U.S. President," Wigginton continued. "A few of the titles also give students and teachers the ability to access updated information online, which is noteworthy in today's world where history is made every minute, especially during an election year."

Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools adopted the following Glencoe titles for the 2008-2009 school year:

  Grade 6
-- World History: Journey Across Time, The Early Ages

  Grades 9-12
-- The American Vision: Modern Times
-- United States Government: Democracy in Action
  -- Understanding Psychology
-- A History of the Modern World
