A new Tier 3 math intervention program designed for students who are two or more years below grade level is now available for middle school students. Originally released for Grades K-5, Math Triumphs from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe is now offered for Grades 6-8. In the three-tier Response to Intervention (RtI) model, students in Tier 3 need the most intensive intervention.

Math Triumphs is a proven intervention program designed around the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum Focal Points, ensuring student mastery of foundational skills and concepts from prior grades that are prerequisites to the current grade level.

With the expansion of Math Triumphs through Grade 8, it is an ideal accompaniment to the publishers' vertically aligned basal math program, Math Connects K-8. The programs share common authors and vocabulary so that the instructional model is tightly aligned.

Art Block, senior vice president and publisher for mathematics and science for the McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe, says that in Grades 6-8, there is a heavy focus on getting students prepared for algebra, since research shows students who are successful in Algebra I and Geometry tend to be successful in college.

"Middle school students who are not on grade level can find themselves falling even farther behind without appropriate intervention to help them catch up. When these students don't have the basic skills, the gap becomes even more apparent," said Block. "For example, if students have difficulty adding fractions, they will likely have difficulty with more advanced topics that have fraction addition as a prerequisite skill."

Math Triumphs focuses on building a strong foundation with step-by-step instruction for students to master every skill. For each lesson, the teacher explains and models the skill and then leads the students in guided application. Uniquely scaffolded practice problems provide support by breaking down each skill into the simplest understanding.

Ongoing assessments throughout Math Triumphs help match instruction to students' needs and monitor their progress. Math Triumphs offers targeted resources so a teacher can differentiate instruction for each student.

Math Triumphs also offers targeted digital resources that allow teachers to provide the instruction students need, including the Learner Management System StudentWorks™ Plus Online with AdvanceTracker. Meaningful diagnostic assessments help identify student needs for intervention and prescribe program resources to address those needs.
