Top reading authors from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, a leading publisher of print and digital educational materials for elementary students, recently collaborated to share their expertise in a volume of writings. The volume, to be published by the California Department of Education in July 2009, addresses the latest strategies and theories for improving English learner instruction in the classroom. Among other researchers, the volume will feature the writings of Diane August, Ph.D., Tim Shanahan, Ph.D., and Jana Echevarria, Ph.D.,
These three also applied their extensive knowledge and expertise in reading by co-authoring Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's California Treasures. California Treasures is a comprehensive reading and language arts program that includes differentiated instruction, an English language development program, writing support, and classroom management resources.
The book's main content focuses on such topics as implementing two-way immersion programs, research on English language development (ELD), and ELD in elementary and secondary grades. In other chapters, Dr. August and Dr. Shanahan discuss findings from the National Literacy Panel report and Dr. Echevarria will review programs and practices for effective sheltered content instruction. There is also a section dedicated to the latest in EL legislation and general best practices.
Dr. Echevarria, a professor of education at California State University, Long Beach and Dr. August, a senior research scientist at the Center for Applied Linguistics, both served on the author team that developed California Treasures program. Dr. Echevarria, also served as co-author of California Treasures' California Tesoros de lectura program, a parallel Grades K-6 reading and language arts program in Spanish.
Dr. Shanahan, a professor of Urban Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and director of the UIC Center for Literacy, has published more than 100 books, chapters, and articles on reading and writing and received numerous awards for his research and work in education.
