Educators from across California came together to network, share ideas, and learn from one another at a Literacy Symposium hosted by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe on November 13-14 in Costa Mesa, CA.
The event, designed to provide a forum for discussion about critical issues facing California educators today, featured presentations by some of the leading experts in reading and literature in the nation.
These experts, authors of the new Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe reading and literature programs for Grades K-8, California Treasures (Grades K-6) and Glencoe Literature: California Treasures (Grades 6-8 and also available for Grades 9-12), conducted sessions on topics such as: "Better Learning through Structured Teaching: The Gradual Release of Responsibility Model"; "Differentiating Instruction: Sounds so Simple, but it's NOT!"; and "Going with the Flow: Where Motivation and Comprehension Intersect." Presenters included: Dr. Diane August, Bob Blattner, Dr. Jana Echevarria, Dr. Douglas Fisher, Dr. Vicki Gibson, Dr. Jan Hasbrouck, Dr. Timothy Shanahan, and Dr. Jeffrey Wilhelm.
Small group sessions throughout the day promoted interaction among attendees and included subjects such as "Strategic Guidelines for EL Students and Effective Intervention" and "10 Things You Ought to Know About Reading Comprehension."
Attendees commented that one of their biggest challenges is classroom and time management. Dr. Gibson addressed this critical issue during a session on how to differentiate instruction while systematically managing your classroom with California Treasures. Also, attendees learned how differentiated instruction is made possible by using California Treasures' all-in-one teacher's edition.
"We were so pleased with the event, the attendees, and the collaboration we witnessed," said co-author and presenter, Dr. Timothy Shanahan. "It's so critical to support these educators in their very important roles - teaching our children. Not only did attendees get a lot out of the sessions, but we as program authors did as well. We take the things we learn and continue to incorporate these insights into making the programs the best they can be for teachers and for students."
