Glencoe Literature has gained many fans in Alabama, where 52 percent of the state's market adopted the program for the 2008-2009 school year. The skills and strategies within Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's new inquiry-based reading and language arts program seamlessly integrate with literature and specifically align to Alabama state standards, enabling students to retain what they learn.

Small districts like Sylacauga City Schools in Sylacauga to large systems like Jefferson County Schools in Birmingham have adopted Glencoe Literature for Grades 6-12.

Baldwin County Public Schools, in Bay Minette, is one of the fastest growing school districts in the state. Teachers adopted Glencoe Literature in all seven of the district's high schools in August 2008. Dr. Lawanna Sharpless, the district's secondary English and foreign language supervisor, said the district's number one reason for adopting Glencoe Literature was its specific alignment with the new Alabama English Language Arts Course of Study Standards. "The standards are identified on the pages of the teacher's edition," she explained. "This is a tremendous help to teachers. The program also meets the course standards better than any other series available."

To further motivate learning and help students with comprehension, technology is integrated throughout the program including an online student edition and StudentWorks™, which include links to videos, activities, animation, and graphic organizers.

"Students are able to work online, at home, according to their schedules. Both students and teachers like this flexibility," added Dr. Sharpless.

The Glencoe Literature series for Grades 6-12 includes a comprehensive collection of exceptional literature and engaging nonfiction with integrated skill development and targeted differentiated instruction. A variety of cultures are represented through rich topics and themes. These selections are explored through inquiry-based Big Questions and Big Ideas increasing student comprehension.
