Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, the leading provider of print and digital educational materials for middle and secondary students, is developing California students in Grades 6-12 into expert readers with in-depth literary instruction through its interactive reading tool, Novel Companion.

Novel Companion is a component of Glencoe Literature: California Treasures, an all-new literature program for California students in Grades 6- 12. The program is a comprehensive collection of exceptional literature and engaging, age-appropriate nonfiction customized to both California's language arts content and English language development standards.

"When students have a personal and practical interest in what they are learning, they are more engaged and attentive," said senior program consultant Jeffrey Wilhelm, Ph.D., professor of English education at Boise State University. "By helping students make connections -- between their existing interests and knowledge, the skills they are learning in school, appropriate literature, and back to the world where they can use what is learned -- Novel Companion builds students' confidence and helps create lifelong readers."

Novel Companion is uniquely designed to help students apply the skills they learned in Glencoe Literature: California Treasures to novel study. Students are moved from textbook lessons to studying literary works through skills-based novel lessons.

Glencoe Literature: California Treasures is customized to both California's language arts content and English language development standards, and instruction is informed by ongoing assessment of each student's strengths and needs.
