High school students will have the opportunity to study "real world" law, democracy, and human rights when the eighth edition of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's Street Law: A Course in Practical Law debuts in January.
Going beyond abstract theory, this highly interactive curriculum meets students "on the street" and addresses the legal and civic issues that impact their everyday lives. Updated topics in this edition include cyber crime, identity theft, intellectual property rights, terrorism, immigration, and recent Supreme Court decisions.
Street Law, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing practical, participatory education about law, democracy, and human rights, collaborated with Glencoe to develop Street Law: A Course in Practical Law.
"Street Law is not your typical textbook," said Lee Arbetman, one of the authors. "It's designed to engage students through real world examples, promote civic participation and develop life skills, critical thinking and decision-making. Students today are faced with a law-saturated society. This helps them better understand the impact legal and civic issues have on their lives - whether or not they pursue a legal career."
Both teachers and students appreciate the high interest content, practical application and case study-based lessons. The program also encourages involvement from community members, like lawyers and law enforcement officers, who come into the classroom to co-present lessons iin their areas of expertise.
Integrated technology helps teachers manage lessons with ease. For example, the interactive teacher manual brings all teaching resources into one place. ExamView® allows teachers to create tests. In addition, the online student edition and online learning center are accessible to students 24/7. Expanded content, vocabulary practice, web activities, and Supreme Court Case Studies help tie lessons to current affairs.
The program also dovetails with Street Law, Inc.'s diversity pipeline programs which encourage students to improve their grades, go to college, and consider law-related careers.
