Results from a recent national field test of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks, a new social studies program for Grades K-6, show that teachers who piloted the program found the concise, focused lessons to be an efficient and effective way to teach comprehensive content.
"Results from the field test validate the 'focused content' and active learning instructional approach of Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks," said Murray Giles, senior vice president and publisher for K-12 social studies and world languages for the McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. "This interactive program meets social studies content standards while capturing students' interest through engaging multimedia activities and content that is presented both visually and verbally."
Giles added, "Because the content is coupled with language arts skill building and a unique leveled reader program, teachers can easily integrate social studies content while teaching reading and writing."
Conducted by the Evaluation Services Center at the University of Cincinnati, the field test involved 46 elementary school teachers from 13 states. Participants were experienced educators who volunteered to use one unit of the program during an eight-week period.
Macmillan/McGraw-Hill commissioned the field test to evaluate teachers' reactions to the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks instructional approach. In today's classrooms, teachers must place more emphasis on state-tested subjects like reading, mathematics, and science, which gives them less time to teach social studies. The field test was designed to determine whether Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks, which features concise, standards-based content with strong integrated reading, writing and social studies skills, would meet the needs of busy teachers.
Across grade levels, 85 percent of teachers involved in the field test stated they preferred Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks' active and visual learning approach to the traditional basal approach of teaching social studies. They noted the text is accessible to all students, even those who require additional help in reading fundamentals. Eighty-seven percent of teachers reported the leveled readers to be effective.
Because of its focused content, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks features smaller, more manageable textbooks (small books for small hands). Ninety-six percent of teachers rated both the student and teacher's editions as helpful and effective. Teachers also raved about the program's technology components - CDs, DVDs, and PowerPoint presentations that are perfect for utilizing interactive whiteboards - all supporting and enriching the learning experience.
At the close of the project, 99 percent of the teachers said they would certainly consider adopting Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks. Fifty-nine percent said they would definitely recommend adoption of this new program.
