Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, the leading provider of print and digital educational materials for middle and secondary students, and California's own Diane August, Ph.D., have unearthed key research-driven strategies that help equip teachers to incorporate the state's English Learners (ELs) into the mainstream curriculum.
Dr. August, who is a senior research scientist with the National Research and Development Center on English-Language Learners, co-authored Expressions, a supplemental English language development program of Glencoe Literature: California Treasures. Expressions is a comprehensive collection of exceptional literature and engaging nonfiction. It is designed specifically for the state of California and provides integrated skill development and targeted differentiated instruction for Grades 6-8.
"Glencoe Literature: California Treasures' Expressions uses scaffolding techniques to make the content accessible for ELs," said Dr. August. "Building on the latest research, the program allows ELs to participate in shared interactive reading before they do solo student reading for main reading selections. This helps them to better understand the material before they have to read independently."
Based on Dr. August's latest research on ELs, Expressions includes standards-based content with strong integrated language arts skills and high-interest reading selections. The program builds on the embedded EL strategies in the core literature program.
Dr. August said the key techniques used in Expressions to enhance content understanding of ELs are:
-- Scaffolding techniques that make content concepts clear.
-- Additional practice to reinforce key words, skills, ideas, and concepts.
-- In-line curriculum support for teachers to help ELs master the same content as their English proficient peers.
-- Videos demonstrating these various techniques in action provided as part of the Professional Development Reading Video library.
-- Opportunities for interaction with English proficient peers, which is instrumental to developing a second language.
Dr. August believes that strong support for EL students is especially important for California teachers because almost 25 percent of the state's students enter the schools as bilingual or speaking a primary language other than English.
Glencoe Literature: California Treasures is aligned with both California's language arts content and English language development standards.
