Unique Reading Program for Struggling Adolescent Readers Features American, British, and World Literature

Middle and high school students reading two or more years below grade level now have the opportunity to read and comprehend the same selections used with their peers in grade-level literature classrooms. Jamestown Education, a division of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, recently released three new editions of its Jamestown Literature: An Adapted Reader program. The new editions include American, British, and World literature.

"The Jamestown Literature program is built specifically to remediate struggling adolescent readers and help them catch up to grade level," said Steve McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. "Discovering that they can analyze and understand these selections builds students' confidence and helps them succeed in the classroom."

The Jamestown Literature: An Adapted Reader program contains a wide range of must-have literature selections for students in Grades 6-12 that are adapted to lower reading levels. In order to help students understand the text, the vocabulary has been adjusted, sentence structure simplified, and/or the selection has been abridged. Reading skills and literary elements are taught throughout the adapted selections.

Students are given a high level of support as they read and analyze the adapted text. Engaging pictures, graphics, and graphic organizers help students make connections with the selections, while an English Coach feature provides guided reading support for English language learners.

The program was developed to correspond to Glencoe Literature's basal literature program. All of the selections in the American, British, and World literature editions are taken from the basal texts and are connected to the core program.
