Glencoe/McGraw-Hill has achieved great success improving students writing skills in Louisiana with its inquiry-based reading and language arts programs.

Scores for writing at Franklin Parish Schools in Louisiana substantially improved when students began using Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's literature program. After only six weeks with the program, Grade 8 students at Crowville Middle School earned a composite scaled writing score of 70 percent on the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) in 2008, up from 52 percent in 2007. One student even earned a perfect score.

Pam Ashley, Grade 8 English language arts teacher for the district, used strategies in the Glencoe/McGraw-Hill program to strengthen her students' writing skills in voice and word choice, areas where they had struggled. "One of the students earned a perfect score on his LEAP essay," she said. "The majority of other students scored at mastery or advanced. This happened in only six weeks. Can you imagine what they can do after using the Glencoe/McGraw-Hill program for an entire school year?"

Now Glencoe/McGraw-Hill has developed an all-new reading and language arts program for the state of California called Glencoe Literature: California Treasures that integrates proven methods to improve writing instruction for adolescent students.

Each writing activity has specific, reachable goals and teaches students the ongoing writing process. Connections to engaging literature and high-interest nonfiction selections help students make real connections to the material and summarize text.

Every grade level of Glencoe Literature: California Treasures reinforces the writing process and teaches students to construct more complex, sophisticated writing products. In addition, Glencoe's Online Essay Grader provides opportunities for students to compose their writing electronically and saves teachers valuable time grading essays.
