To help teachers meet the needs of the California's large population of English Learners (EL), Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, the leading provider of print and digital educational materials for middle and secondary students, has developed its all-new English Language Development (ELD) program for Grades 6-8, Expressions.

Expressions is a component of Glencoe Literature: California Treasures, a comprehensive collection of exceptional literature and engaging nonfiction. The program is designed specifically for California where almost 25 percent of students across grade levels enter state schools as bilingual or speaking a primary language other than English. It provides integrated skill development and targeted differentiated instruction for Grades 6-8.

Based on the latest research of leading EL and reading experts, Expressions features standards-based content with strong integrated language arts skills and high-interest reading selections. The program builds on the embedded EL strategies in the core literature program.

"Expressions offers California teachers additional level-appropriate instruction for English learners during regular classroom lessons," said author Jana Echevarria, Ph.D., professor of education at California State University. "This program truly differentiates instruction every day to help EL students master the language acquisition skills they need to succeed."

This all-new program provides an additional 60 minutes of daily English Language Development support as required by California and seamlessly integrates with the core program to help EL students keep up with their peers.

Research-based techniques and ongoing scaffolding of skills help EL students improve their English language proficiency. Integrated digital and print activities include rich, background building activities and extensive vocabulary support. Students also benefit from repetition and opportunities for oral practice provided in print and digital formats.

In addition, Expressions helps teachers differentiate instruction by including on-level versions of the core program reading selections and a variety of accessible, authentic literature. Themes and accompanying skill instruction parallel the core literature program enabling students to follow along with whole class instruction and easily transition to the core literature program.
