Sacramento area educators are invited to learn about an elementary reading and language arts program developed for California from SRA/McGraw-Hill called Imagine It! The program will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on October 18 at The Sterling Hotel, 1300 H St. in Sacramento.
SRA/McGraw-Hill's California edition of Imagine It! was developed for Grades Pre-K-6 and recently was recommended by the Instructional Materials Advisory Panel to the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission in the state of California.
Senior author Marsha Roit, Ed.D. will present key elements of the research-based program. As senior author, Roit helped develop content within Imagine It! including the phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and inquiry components. She also works directly with school districts creating staff development models that support research-based instruction and its effectiveness. She has focused research on strategy instruction with both mainstream and ELD students.
Local resident and author Karen Hayashi, MA, also is a presenter at the session. A retired California educator, Hayashi provided guidance in alignment to state standards. She has experience as a regular and special education teacher, school principal, reading specialist, and curriculum administrator. She was formerly employed by Elk Grove Unified School District.
Input from California educators helped shape every aspect of SRA Imagine It! SRA developed three program options that meet varied teaching and learning needs.

Imagine It! English Language Development (ELD) is an expanded version of Imagine It! specifically designed for teachers with students whose primary language is not English. Imagine It! ELD:
-- Features an additional hour of daily ELD instruction -- Promotes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills -- Contains themes that align with core reading
!Imaginalo! is a companion program to Imagine It! that helps students develop Spanish literacy. This program:
-- Uses a syllabic approach to teach reading -- Includes authentic Spanish literature -- Builds Spanish literacy in dual-immersion classrooms About Imagine It!
Imagine It! is the result of 45 years of research and field study. It contains all the elements recommended by the National Reading Panel: instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness, explicit phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program has a focus on Response to Intervention (RtI) and covers all daily Reading, Language Arts, and Writing curriculum requirements. It also has abundant curriculum links to Science and Social Studies. Imagine It! fully integrates state-of-the-art technology tools to enhance learning.
The authors, who are researchers themselves, continue to update the program as new studies are published revealing the latest findings on effective instructional methods. For more information, visit ImagineItReading.com.
