Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, one of the nation's leaders in educational publishing for elementary schools, has achieved great success with a research-based elementary reading and language arts program it developed for Florida.
Teachers in most districts across Florida began using the program this fall. In fact, McGraw-Hill School Education Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, has nearly 70 percent of the market share for core basal reading programs in Florida. Districts that adopted the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill program include Broward County Public Schools in Fort Lauderdale, Pinellas County Schools in Largo, and Hillsborough County Public Schools in Tampa.
Macmillan/McGraw-Hill created the program after careful study to align with Florida's Sunshine State Standards. These standards incorporate the development of important skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, innovation, and collaboration.
The publisher also worked closely with groups of Florida teachers, conducting extensive interviews, and incorporating the latest in educational research, to develop a comprehensive program that meets the needs of the nation's fourth most populous state.
For example, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill listened to Florida teachers about the challenges they face in teaching the state's large number of English language learners, comprising 8.7 percent of the total student population. After listening carefully and studying the latest research, Macmillan included daily lesson plans, leveled readers, and other tools to support students as they transition successfully into English.
Rachel Powers, supervisor for reading and language arts for Pasco County Schools, said her district adopted the program in all 44 elementary schools. She said, although Pasco is a very diverse district serving a wide range of student populations, the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill program supports teachers in effectively differentiating instruction to ensure all learners continue to reach their highest potential.
"The strong research-based instructional routines support student acquisition and application of our content standards beyond the basic skill level to really develop critical and creative thinking skills in our students," she explained. "I have already seen many of our classrooms transformed into collaborative learning environments where students are actively engaged in seeking, analyzing, creating, and communicating information."
Now Macmillan/McGraw-Hill has created an all-new elementary reading and language arts program specifically for California named California Treasures. Just as in Florida, the publisher developed the program to meet California's state standards with extensive research and a strong level of input from the state's teachers.
California Treasures is a comprehensive reading and language arts program that includes differentiated instruction, an English language development program, writing support, and classroom management resources.
