Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's inquiry-based reading and language arts programs have won widespread approval in middle and high schools in Alabama, where 52 percent of the state's market adopted Glencoe's literature programs for the 2008-2009 school year.
Glencoe worked closely with teachers as it developed the programs used in Alabama, conducting in-depth interviews, holding meetings with advisory groups, and incorporating the latest in educational research on the best ways to support adolescent readers. The programs also were carefully aligned with Alabama's state standards.
The resulting programs for Grades 6-12 couple a comprehensive collection of exceptional literature and engaging nonfiction with integrated skill development and differentiated instruction. These Alabama specific programs are in use all across Alabama, from large urban districts like Jefferson County Schools in Birmingham to smaller systems such as Sylacauga City Schools.
One of the many teachers enthusiastic about the programs is Linda Green, a Grade 6 teacher for Shelby County Schools, which is one of the largest and fastest growing districts in the state. She was a member of the Shelby County Adoption Textbook Committee that chose the Glencoe programs for Grades 6-12.
"Glencoe's literature program is thoroughly comprehensive and user-friendly from both a student's perspective and a teacher's perspective," she said. "The layout is straightforward and enticing, and the story titles are intriguing and catch the attention of students, which isn't always easy to do with teenagers."
Now Glencoe has created an all-new reading and language arts program for schools in California called Glencoe Literature: California Treasures. The publisher has worked closely with California teachers to develop a program that allows middle and high school students to develop a true love of reading by introducing them to a comprehensive selection of high-interest literature and engaging nonfiction within a framework of standards-based skill instruction.
Glencoe Literature: California Treasures is aligned to the state's standards and includes built-in support for English Language Development to meet the challenges of the state's classrooms, where almost 25 percent of the students enter schools as bilingual or speaking a primary language other than English.
