Math Connects, a vertically aligned PreK-8 basal math program from Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, is a top contender for the core K-8 mathematics curriculum in Washington schools statewide. This new, innovative curriculum received top scores among nearly two dozen math programs in the state superintendent's instructional materials review conducted this summer.
Math Connects is the only true vertically aligned mathematics curriculum. Vertical alignment provides learners with an articulated, focused, and coherent sequence of content throughout Grades PreK-8. It ensures that content standards and units of study are introduced, reinforced, and assessed, and that instruction is targeted to student needs and state standards.
Math Connects was built with two goals in mind: success at each grade level and future student success in Algebra I and beyond. This is supported by a recent College Board study, which found that nearly 80 percent of students who successfully complete Algebra I and Geometry by Grade 10 will succeed in college. These findings were consistent for students of every ethnic and socioeconomic background.
The program offers digital solutions to further conceptual understanding. For example, teachers have the option to use standalone digital or print versions or a combination of the two. For students, lessons come alive with animations as they learn concepts and practice skills in a fun and motivating way. Other digital tools include CD-ROM and online content, digital assessment tools, customizable PowerPoint, personal tutors, audio support, self-check quizzes, interactive games, and much more. Digital resources are interactive whiteboard ready.
Advance Tracker, an innovative online learner management system, provides teachers with the ability to monitor student progress and provide data-driven intervention and differentiated instruction. Strategic intervention options are offered for all grades too, with intensive intervention references to Math Triumphs, a Tier 3 companion intervention program.
In addition to hands-on conceptual development opportunities, Math Connects helps students become independent problem solvers through strategy lessons, investigation lessons (they choose the strategy that works best for them), cross-curricular problem solving lessons (like solving math problems in music), and Real-World Problem Solving Readers that extend these skills and strategies through applications in science and social studies.
For additional support, the program is horizontally aligned with two programs developed with funds from the National Science Foundation to give teachers and administrators additional tools to help meet assessment goals; IMPACT Mathematics, a research-based math program for Grades K-5, and Mathscape: Seeing and Thinking Mathematically, a comprehensive math program for Grades 6-8.
