Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's California Treasures, a new research-based elementary reading and language arts program, recently was recommended by the Instructional Materials Advisory Panel to the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission in the state of California. This selection represents a comprehensive digital and print solution customized to meet California standards.

"California Treasures is a complete language arts program that includes English language development support, skills practice, and assessment opportunities, which enables teachers to meet the diverse needs of students at all reading levels," said Steve McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. "In addition, the program motivates and captures the interest of young readers."

California Treasures is written specifically to follow the state's revised English language arts standards and incorporates an English language development (ELD) component to assist students transitioning from Spanish. The program is accompanied by California Tesoros de lectura, a parallel K-6 reading and language arts program in Spanish.

Differentiated Instruction for All Learners

California Treasures and California Tesoros de lectura offer a variety of differentiated instruction strategies to meet the needs of all learners. Available in digital and print formats, the program offers skills-based practice readers, small group lesson plans, independent workstation activities, and a variety of leveled practice and assessment.

English Language Development and Spanish Support from Experts

Developed by an author team including leading Spanish-language and reading experts, California Treasures includes built-in targeted support for academic vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.

Additionally, a complete English language development program developed by Diane August, Ph.D. is available for Grades K-6. Providing an array of targeted instructional strategies and materials, this program offers a clear path for students transitioning to English.

Completing Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's offering for California students and teachers, California Tesoros de lectura offers parallel instruction for Spanish speaking students with side-by-side Spanish and English instruction in the teacher's edition and utilizes engaging authentic Spanish literature with appropriate phonics instruction to ground Spanish speaking students in reading skills and experiences.

Research-Based Strategies to Improve Student Writing

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill partnered with The Writers' Express, a non-profit organization committed to improving students' literacy skills, to develop a new, research-based instructional model for teaching writing. Writing assignments focus on building writing foundational skills at all grades. Each lesson offers a writing assignment linked to student interest and experiences.

Resources for Classroom Management

California Treasures and California Tesoros de lectura feature an effective, instructional plan for teachers to manage the classroom with ease, while providing instruction at different levels. One teacher's edition provides clear direction, explicit instruction, and classroom management resources for California teachers. Integrated diagnostic assessment allows for immediate lesson modifications to address student needs.

Further support is provided by Teachers Works Plus, an interactive lesson planner, helping teachers create lesson plans directly addressing California standards. Also, a professional development program with up-to-date research strategies supports all teacher efforts.
