Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth largest school system in the nation, has selected Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's Web-based Jamestown Reading Navigatorâ„¢ as its reading intervention solution for high school students. Educators across the country applaud the program for its technology-driven approach and age-appropriate content to improve adolescent literacy.

"Technology-based instruction is key to reaching today's student," said Steve McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. "A program built specifically for adolescent readers, Jamestown Reading Navigator provides students and teachers with the convenience of online access with high-interest and age appropriate content."

Jamestown Reading Navigator, developed under Glencoe/McGraw-Hill's Jamestown Education imprint, underwent a thorough review beginning in the 2007-2008 school year. A committee of teachers and reading coaches were actively involved in selecting the program. The program is a popular choice among educators because it is accessible online and includes age-appropriate content, built-in formative assessment, and customizable lessons targeted for tier 2 readers. Approximately 25,000 students will use the program over the next five years in the Miami-Dade County district.

Effective adolescent literacy programs should use technology as both an instruction tool and an instructional topic, according to a recent report released by the Interactive Educational Systems Design, an evaluator of educational software, multimedia products, Web sites, and print-based instructional programs. In the report, the company found that, "consistent interaction with computerized reading instruction in areas such as vocabulary assistance and guided reading instruction can help adolescents with reading and text comprehension."

Jamestown Reading Navigator is the first online-based, reading intervention curriculum with explicit skill instruction for middle school and high school students reading two or more years below grade level.

To monitor student progress, Jamestown Reading Navigator includes a customizable assessment program to help teachers manage individual student learning and provides ongoing, up-to-the-minute information on how students are performing.

The program is receiving strong endorsements from educators across the country. "Students are receptive to Jamestown Reading Navigator because of its interactive nature and because of the high interest reading. It also gives them the opportunity to become their own teacher, which promotes independence, when they separate from their peers for part of the class. They love the fact that their scores are available to them, and when they finish an assignment the teacher is informed by e-mail," said Robert Zuzzolo, an ESL teacher in New York City.
