Many students, especially English learners, need to be able to understand the language behind science in order to access the content and learn the concepts. To help students in Grades K-6 learn science content and science literacy skills, Wright Group/McGraw-Hill has developed Content Essentials for Science. Through a combination of clear and concise handbooks and valuable technology tools, Content Essentials for Science provides explicit strategy instruction through practical and proven techniques.
Through Part 1: Science Essentials, students learn about science ideas and the vocabulary used to talk about them. Part 1 covers Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Studying Science. Part 2: Literacy Essentials teaches students how to read and comprehend content-area text. The program covers Reading Science, Comprehension, Understanding Language, and Writing for Science. Each lesson in Part 1 is tied to a comprehension lesson in Part 2, allowing students to apply comprehension skills to science text.
A research-based program, Content Essentials for Science targets students who need background knowledge, concept building, and vocabulary development to comprehend and explain science concepts. It accomplishes this objective by preteaching key concepts, vocabulary, and background knowledge before the whole-class lesson and reviewing them after the whole-class lesson. It also provides explicit instruction in:
-- Nonfiction reading strategies, including comprehension, text features and structures, and genres (i.e., how to read science books). -- Understanding the language, including word and language use. -- Content-driven writing.
Content Essentials for Science is a flexible program that can be used with any science or language arts curriculum and delivered by teachers, coaches, or paraprofessionals.
Every lesson features an electronic version of the Student Handbook and Teacher Guide, along with video and multimedia support available online, including:
-- Audio support in nine languages. -- Online Glossary to provide definitions and pronunciations. -- Photo Library to offer visuals corresponding to the lesson. -- Animations to bring pages and illustrations to life. -- Activities and Games to engage students as they work on content. -- Graphic Organizers to extend the lesson.
