As part of an effort to promote public support of the teaching profession, TeachersCount, a not-for-profit organization, has paired celebrities with their favorite teachers in a poster series to be shared with schools nationwide through an initiative co-sponsored by McGraw-Hill Education.
Nearly a quarter of a million posters based on the TeachersCount "Behind Every Famous Person Is a Fabulous Teacher" advertising campaign are being shipped in sample kits of instructional materials to school districts across the country by McGraw-Hill Education. Additionally, educators may request posters from TeachersCount directly while supplies last by emailing info@teacherscount.org. The poster series is part of an ongoing campaign; a second set of posters featuring four new celebrities will be printed this summer.
The "Behind Every Famous Person Is a Fabulous Teacher" campaign features well-known individuals with their favorite teachers. Among the notable "students" are actors America Ferrera and Tony Shalhoub, recording artist Chris Bridges (Ludacris), and American Express chairman and CEO Ken Chenault. The series of ads appear throughout the Time Inc. family of magazines.
"A good education is about more than academics -- it's also about learning values and principles," noted Mr. Chenault in his comments about his favorite grade school teacher, Lydia "Lee" Lecraw. Chenault added, "Lee taught her students about being responsible. She taught us the importance of integrity. Though thoroughly demanding, she also had a special gift for making learning fun."
America Ferrara's teacher, Sue Freitag, said that she had "the best job in the world" at Los Angeles' El Camino Real High School, describing herself as Ms. Ferrara's number one fan. "Most teachers teach in hopes of having a positive impact on a child's life. I hope that students will look up at these posters in their classrooms and think, 'I've had a teacher like that' or better yet, 'I want to be a teacher like that.'"
"Our co-sponsorship of this campaign is a natural fit for McGraw-Hill Education because everything we do revolves around helping teachers teach and students learn," said Bill Oldsey, executive vice president, McGraw-Hill Education. "We are proud to honor teachers for their dedication to young people everywhere, and we believe the posters are a great extension of the TeachersCount ad campaign. And with National Teacher Day being celebrated May 6, the timing couldn't be better."
"The posters in this ad campaign are meant to inspire," said TeachersCount executive director Diana Burroughs. "They were created to remind teachers that their efforts really do make a long-term difference and to encourage today's students to become tomorrow's teachers. And now with the support of McGraw-Hill Education, the posters will adorn the walls of our nation's schools, enabling us to reach students and teachers across the country with this important message."
