Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe Help Teachers Bring Struggling Students Up to Grade Level With Math Triumphs

Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe, leading publishers of print and digital education materials for Grades PreK-6 and 6-12 respectively, today announced the publication of Math Triumphs, a Tier 3 math intervention program designed for K-5 students who are two or more years below grade level.
Math Triumphs is the first intervention program designed around the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Curriculum Focal Points, ensuring student mastery of foundational skills and concepts from prior grades that are prerequisites to the current grade level.
Math Triumphs is an ideal accompaniment to Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe's vertically aligned basal math program, Math Connects K-8. However, it addresses universal math skills and concepts and therefore can be used easily with any math curriculum during the school day, after school, or during summer school.
Struggling students face different challenges and gaps in knowledge, so Math Triumphs offers targeted resources that allow teachers to provide the instruction that students need, when they need it. Meaningful diagnostic assessments identify students for intensive intervention and prescribe program resources to teach and reinforce essential mathematics content.
"Math Triumphs uses a sound instructional philosophy to help struggling students get back on track," said Steve McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and Glencoe. "The alignment to NCTM Focal Points paired with frequent assessment eliminates guesswork about students' needs and progress. This makes for an extremely targeted and effective program."
Step-by-Step Skill Building
Math Triumphs focuses on building a strong foundation with step-by-step instruction for students to master each skill. For each lesson, the teacher will explain and model the skill, then lead the students in guided application. Each example is partnered with parallel practice problems to help students reinforce their understanding of the concept or skill. Next, the students apply the skill on their own with multiple practice opportunities and assessment. Uniquely scaffolded practice problems provide support by breaking down each skill to the simplest understanding.
Targeted Instruction
Ongoing assessments throughout Math Triumphs help match instruction to students' needs and monitor their progress. A combination of print and digital assessment tools are easy for teachers to use and help provide a pathway for students to exit the program and enter the regular classroom full time.
Math Triumphs offers targeted resources so a teacher can differentiate instruction for each student, providing many ways a student can practice math skills. Resources include skills, problem-solving, and homework practice opportunities; Visual Vocabulary Cards; Vocabulary and English Language Development resource master; English/Spanish glossary, and more. Math Coach Notes in the Teacher's Edition provide additional teaching strategies and tips.
Parental involvement is a key element of successful intervention programs. Each Math Triumphs lesson begins with Home Connection, which includes a family letter in English and Spanish identifying the chapter content, and a short activity that can be done at home to reinforce the concept being studied.
