McGraw-Hill Professional and JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association) today announced they will join forces to offer medical students and clinicians vital print and digital resources for learning and practicing evidence-based medicine. JAMA, the world's most widely circulated medical journal, and McGraw-Hill Professional, a leading global provider of information resources for the scientific and medical communities, have reached an agreement to publish three medical references and to create a new interactive digital product.

"This valuable alliance is a major step forward in building McGraw-Hill Professional's presence in the global medical education market," said Philip Ruppel, president, McGraw-Hill Professional. "In addition to affiliating McGraw-Hill with the prestigious JAMA brand, this publishing agreement provides McGraw-Hill access to the most highly regarded evidence-based medicine content and proponents in the world."

Evidence-based medicine is one of the most important concepts introduced to the medical curriculum and to clinical practice in the last 50 years. Its practice involves careful assessment and interpretation of medical studies and research articles, and the best application of that literature to the optimal care of the patient.

McGraw-Hill Professional and JAMA will cooperatively publish three titles: the second edition of The User's Guides to the Medical Literature; the second edition of The User's Guides to the Medical Literature: Essentials of Evidence-based Clinical Practice; and The Rational Clinical Examination, a first edition title based on the acclaimed JAMA series of articles on evidence-based assessment of signs, symptoms, and test results. Both of the User's Guides will publish in February 2008 and The Rational Clinical Examination in April 2008.

The agreement also covers the joint development of a state-of-the-art, interactive online product to accompany the three titles. This electronic tool provides full-text access to the content in the User's Guides and The Rational Clinical Examination, as well as innovative interactive and pedagogical features designed to help students and clinicians learn the best practice of evidence-based medicine. It is anticipated that the online product will be launched in June 2008.

"As someone involved in medical education for over 35 years, I believe this advanced format will revolutionize how physicians and other clinicians learn and continue learning," said Catherine D. DeAngelis, MD, MPH, editor in chief, JAMA.

The User's Guides to the Medical Literature, 2nd edition is a completely revised and redesigned version of the world's leading book on the principles and clinical application of evidence-based medicine. The updated content contains new material, including several new chapters.

The User's Guides to the Medical Literature: Essentials of Evidence-based Clinical Practice, 2nd edition is a brand new edition of the "essentials" version of The User's Guides to Medical Literature. The completely revised and updated version presents the most clinically focused, evidence-based medicine material from the parent The User's Guides to the Medical Literature book in a more user-friendly, portable, two-color format. It also includes an accompanying CD-ROM.

The Rational Clinical Examination is a next generation resource that goes beyond the standard physical examination (PE) and medical textbooks, by collecting and presenting the evidence-based meaning of signs, symptoms, and the results from PE maneuvers and other diagnostic studies. The book is significantly expanded and updated from the original JAMA articles and includes extensive never-before-published content, in a full color format.
