Everyday MathematicsĀ® from Wright Group/McGraw-Hill is among the most-used and most-trusted elementary mathematics curricula in the country. To celebrate the program's 25 years in America's classrooms, a new Web site -- www.EverydayMathSuccess.com -- is now available to provide teachers, administrators, parents, and policymakers with quick access to research behind the program, studies of its effectiveness, and case studies from users nationwide.
Everyday Mathematics was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project to help PreK-6 students measure up to the demand for greater mathematical competence and problem-solving ability. Based on two decades of research, each grade level of the program was first field tested for a full year in classrooms across the country and revised based on teacher feedback prior to publication. Few programs have gone through such an extensive development process.
Everyday Mathematics' effectiveness has been proven by students' success and strong research results. Here are just a few highlights:
-- The What Works Clearinghouse gave Everyday Mathematics the highest rating of any elementary math program thus far. It found that some rigorously conducted experiments show that Everyday Mathematics has "potentially positive effects" on achievement compared with more traditional math programs. -- The ARC Center, located at the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications, studied the records of 78,000 students and found that the average standardized test scores were significantly higher for students in Everyday Mathematics schools than for students in comparison schools. -- A recent report from the National Academy of Sciences (National Research Council, 2004) made it clear that Everyday Mathematics, of all current elementary school mathematics programs, has been subjected to the most scrutiny by the most researchers. The agreement about the program across so many research studies shows that Everyday Mathematics is effective.
Many districts that use Everyday Mathematics have experienced markedly improved student outcomes on state-mandated tests, including New York City, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach, VA; Kent, WA; Fayetteville, AR; Citrus County, FL; and Dallas, TX.
In addition to accessing the research reports and white papers about Everyday Mathematics and its philosophy, visitors to the Web site can read testimonials from teachers, administrators, and parents. For example, Peggy Carlson, curriculum coordinator for Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Alaska has said, "Everyday Mathematics stands out for developing thoughtful students who learn how to apply their mathematical understanding to real-world situations. This rigorous program builds a strong number sense in students through the development of computation, communication, and application skills. Using this program with fidelity will give our students the skills and confidence to excel in higher level math courses."
The latest Student Achievement Studies, Vol. 6 brochure and an all-new research summary brochure also will be available on the site.
