As national efforts to improve reading instruction focus on the critical adolescent years, Jamestown Education, a division of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, has released two new supplemental programs, American History Ink™ and World Works™, to help engage and motivate struggling readers in Grades 6-12.

Both American History Ink and World Works are multi-book programs featuring high-interest topics that help students build critical thinking skills and comprehension while improving vocabulary acquisition. Each series presents non-threatening, level-appropriate text with engaging illustrations to help visual learners.

"It's critical to provide the right content at the right level to engage struggling adolescent readers," said Steven McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Glencoe. "Compelling topics keep these students motivated to read longer, thus increasing their opportunities for success."

The American History Ink 10-book series brings history to life with historical fiction covering topics commonly covered in American history courses. Told through the eyes of adolescents of the time period, American History Ink increases student interest in history by making the story relevant to someone their age.

Presented in a graphic novel format, texts are appropriate for use in history, humanities and language arts courses, matching teachers' desire to provide reading practice throughout all subjects.

Designed to motivate readers, American History Ink provides background information on the subject, establishes a purpose for reading the text, and activates before-reading discussion. End-of-book activities encourage students to apply critical thinking to personal responses and vocabulary practice.

World Works is a six-book series that engages students' attention and builds reading skills with high-interest topics presented in a real-world context focused on how things work. Units cover Everyday Things, Law, Health, Food, Technology and Nature with articles answering the question, "How does it work?" Article topics encourage students to become aware and involved in timely issues, including the latest technology research, crime scene investigation, energy conservation and much more. Each selection in World Works includes a graphic, chart or diagram along with after-reading critical thinking questions involving the interpretation of charts and graphs.

"American History Ink and World Works are terrific examples of how reading instruction for struggling adolescent readers is evolving. We know students at this age -- no matter what their reading level -- respond better to relevant and age-appropriate materials," said McClung. "These programs provide teachers the tools to help students become better readers for life."
