Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's Treasure Chest Helps K-6 English Learners Develop Language and Literacy Skills

By 2030, almost half of the U.S. population will be speaking a language other than English. As the number of these English-language learners (ELLs) in schools increases, teachers are looking for effective instructional practices to reach all of these students. To help meet this critical need, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill offers Treasure Chest, a research-based language development and literacy curriculum targeting students in Grades K-6.

"Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's Treasure Chest provides a comprehensive, flexible program for ELLs," said Steve McClung, president of McGraw-Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. "This program truly differentiates instruction every day to teach ELL students the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills they need to succeed."

Treasure Chest combines the latest and most innovative knowledge about differentiated instruction with proven teaching approaches based on research, field study, documented classroom success, and teacher input for ELLs.

Treasure Chest can be used with any core reading program, however it directly correlates to Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's Treasures, a K-6 language arts program. Treasure Chest follows the same theme and skill being taught in Treasures each week. The advanced level of Treasure Chest has the same vocabulary as the beginners' level in Treasures to help students make an easy transition into the regular classroom.

Offers Differentiated Instruction for English-language Learners

Treasure Chest's Leveled Readers are designed to differentiate instruction for ELL students at all levels of language acquisition: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. All students learn and read about the same topic, so they can share in groups and build their oral language skills.

For students entirely new to English, Treasure Chest offers My New Words and Newcomers Activity Books to teach basic skills and terminology.

Supports Comprehension by Building Background Knowledge

Research shows that using sheltered instruction - providing meaningful instruction in content areas such as social studies and math - is key to closing the achievement gap for ELLs.

Treasure Chest incorporates the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and effectively builds content-area knowledge. Each lesson is made accessible by beginning with Background Builders, which explicitly link concepts to students' background.

Provides Complete Program Resources

Multiple resources are available for teachers to create a practice routine and meet daily language objectives.

-- Leveled Readers (print and audio)
  -- Alphabet Sound/Spelling Cards
  -- Comprehension Cards
  -- Letter Cards
  -- Leveled Vocabulary Cards
  -- Photo Cards
  -- Retelling Cards
  -- Graphic Organizers
-- Write On/Wipe Off Skills Board
  -- Home-School Connection Work Book
-- New Adventures of Buggles and Beezy Interactive Activities

In addition, Treasure Chest offers both informal and formal assessment opportunities. Based on assessments, a teacher will know when students are ready to enter the regular classroom full time.
