The latest National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that the average Grade 12 science score was actually lower in 2005 than in 1996. With much focus on changes in science curriculum, Glencoe/McGraw-Hill has responded by publishing Glencoe Biology, a new program that contains breakthroughs in making complicated concepts more understandable.

Intended for first year biology students in Grades 9-10, Glencoe Biology was designed to provide learners of varying abilities with the knowledge and skills they need for success. It includes differentiated instruction tools, resources for English Language Learners and unit resource booklets offering leveled teaching strategies.

"Now, more than ever, it's important to be extremely thoughtful in the way science curriculum is presented," said Steven McClung, president of McGraw- Hill School Solutions Group, which includes Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. "Glencoe Biology offers a unique combination of tools to help teachers engage students in a complicated subject while building the life-long skills students of all learning levels need to succeed. This program provides a foundation from which students can make great strides in their comprehension of science as well as other subjects."

Glencoe Biology begins by organizing and presenting the material using a tiered approach to help student retention and comprehension. "Themes" provide overarching concepts used throughout the entire book and are reinforced with "Big Ideas" that summarize each chapter. "Main Ideas" in each section provide details that support the chapter's Big Idea. "Real-World Reading Links," analogies and dynamic artwork and photos provide students the context they need to fully understand biology.

Features throughout Glencoe Biology assist students with the skills and support they need. Strategically placed Reading Checks help gauge student comprehension while Academic Vocabulary, Word Origins and Science Usage vs. Common Usage build vocabulary. Ancillary products such as Reading Essentials for Biology provide accessible content for struggling students. Dinah Zike's Foldables™ study organizers develop organization and study skills while Science Notebooks, based on the renowned Cornell system, teach students better note taking and writing skills.

Glencoe Biology offers a variety of inquiry-based options to help students "think like scientists" and prepare them for future science curricula. Hands- on labs progressively build student knowledge and skills throughout each chapter and assist in grasping the Big Ideas in each chapter.

Diagnostic tests help teachers determine every student's personal learning needs while leveled formative and summative assessment testing options cover every format, easing anxiety during high stakes testing.

Innovative technology resources integrated throughout Glencoe Biology bring the curriculum to life. From Web-based animations that aid in reading comprehension and virtual, expanded labs that take learning outside of the classroom, to supplemental video clips and customized assessments, Glencoe Biology provides tools and resources to challenge and excite students of all learning levels.
