The Grow Network/McGraw-Hill, a leader in educational assessment reporting and personalized instruction, announced today that the MyGuide™ Personal Learning Program has been approved by the California State Board of Education for use in providing remediation and support for students who did not pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE). This approval qualifies the MyGuide program for use under California Assembly Bill 1802, which allocates funding to schools for the purchase of personalized intervention materials for students who did not pass the CAHSEE. This support will help ensure student success on the retake exam, a necessary step for high school graduation.

"We worked with educators to develop a program that provides the highest levels of support to students who need it most," said Mark Malaspina, president of The Grow Network/McGraw-Hill. "Based on students' individual needs, this innovative program helps teachers understand each student's areas of academic weakness and focus on specific remediation methods. It also gives students explicit expectations on what they need to learn and clear feedback on their progress, both essential for improved performance."

The MyGuide Personal Learning Program was launched in 2004 and has proven to be effective in raising student achievement. In Texas, the Governor has stated that the passing rate for students using the personalized study guides increased from 72 percent to 91 percent in the first year of use, and these results led the state to expand the guides to all at-risk students in Grades 9 and 10, to prevent stumbling blocks before they begin. The National Governors Association has showcased the personalized study guides as one of the top ten initiatives being implemented to support high school reform efforts.

For California school districts that select the MyGuide program, each student will receive a personalized study guide based on that student's CAHSEE performance, as well as customized online tutorials. Features of Grow's student materials include:

-- Individual CAHSEE evaluation with subject-area scores and results for
     each strand
-- Targeted instructional treatments for each strand, customized to the
     student's strengths and needs
-- Guided practice problems, concept reviews, and challenge questions for
     focused review and practice
-- Personal Learning Website with multimedia instruction and interactive
tutorials aligned to the student's learning pathways

The MyGuide Program also supports teachers, tutors, and parents in preparing students for the CAHSEE:

-- The Teacher and Tutor Guide enables the MyGuide program to be used in a
variety of settings, such as classroom-based instruction, tutoring, or
     after-school intervention programs
-- Professional development materials help educators integrate the MyGuide
Program with their curriculum and existing instructional initiatives
-- Tools for parents create a network of support for students in preparing
     for the CAHSEE
