McGraw-Hill Education's Open University Press, a leading provider of resources for students and professionals worldwide, has been honored by the British Medical Association (BMA) with its Medical Book of the Year 2006 award for the third edition of A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness by Anne Rogers and David Pilgrim.

"We are thrilled to have received this level of recognition," said Shona Mullen, general manager of the McGraw-Hill Higher Education Group for Europe and South Africa. "This is a highly competitive market and these awards truly reflect the hard work McGraw-Hill Higher Education and Open University Press have put into developing the best possible resources for the medical market."

Praised by reviewers as "simply the best textbook in the area of mental health sociology," A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness, Third Edition, was also honored with an award in the Mental Health category. First published in 1993, the book is a key teaching and learning resource for undergraduates and postgraduates enrolled in a range of medical sociology and health-related courses. The book is also a valuable reference for trainees in the fields of social work, nursing, clinical psychology and psychiatry.

In addition to the two awards for A Sociology of Mental Health and Illness Third Edition, McGraw-Hill Higher Education and Open University Press were honored in BMA's Basis of Medicine category for Patient Safety by Kieran Walshe and Ruth Boaden. This resource presents a research-based perspective on patient safety, drawing together the most recent ideas and thinking from researchers on how to research and understand patient safety issues, and how research findings are used to shape policy and practice.

The BMA Medical Book competition has been conducted annually since 1994 by the BMA's Board of Science and administered by the BMA Library. It aims to encourage and reward excellence in medical publishing and patient information. The competition received 573 entries in 26 categories, and 25 first place prizes were awarded. All entries are reviewed by physicians and educators who are asked to consider accuracy, currency, originality, book production quality, and whether the title meets the needs of its audience.
