Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, the leading provider of secondary educational content, has developed a new suite of reading and language arts programs called REAL Success -- Reading Excellence at All Levels. Glencoe's REAL Success is a complete language arts solution with new programs designed to provide appropriate instruction for all middle and high school students, from struggling readers to those in honors classes.

"More than 3,000 students drop out of high school every school day, and the most commonly cited reason is the lack of literacy skills. A staggering 40 percent of all middle and high school students cannot even read at a basic literacy level-according to Reading Next," said Steve McClung, president of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. "The need for programs that truly motivate all learners to read is clear, and REAL Success provides the solution. The variety of offerings assures that districts can address the needs of all students no matter what their needs."

Research on the needs and motivation factors of adolescent readers drove development of the curriculum.

"REAL Success was carefully designed to help all students to become proficient readers, master standardized tests, and transfer reading success to other disciplines," said Greg Shannon, vice president and director of reading and language arts marketing at Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. "In addition, we've incorporated the latest technology with materials adolescent students want to read."

New programs in the Glencoe REAL Success suite include:

-- Jamestown Reading Navigator (Grades 6-12) -- Jamestown Education's new
online reading intervention program designed for adolescents.
  -- Jamestown Education (Grades 6-12) -- new high-interest supplementary
reading materials with 35 years of history for struggling readers and
     on-level readers.
-- Glencoe Literature: Reading with Purpose (Grades 6-8) -- the first
research-based middle school language arts program effectively
combining the necessary foundation of strong sequential skills
development with the successful reading of classic and contemporary
     literature.
  -- Glencoe Literature: The Reader's Choice (Grades 9-12) -- an all-new
high school literature series promoting skills application and mastery
while immersing students in the world of literature.
  -- Writer's Choice, Speech, Theater, Journalism & AP (Grades 6-12) --
multiple programs such as Writer's Choice, which prepare students for
the new SAT. Other titles under this category cover debate, drama,
journalism, speech, Advance Placement and more.

Nonfiction Content from TIME Magazine Appeals to Today's Students

When struggling readers are asked to read materials intended for younger students, they lose the desire to learn. Glencoe strategically selected materials proven to motivate older readers, such as nonfiction found in leading news publications relevant to their lives. Glencoe's exclusive partnership with TIME offers nonfiction content in a magazine format that captures students' attention and supports critical thinking, inquiry, and comprehension... across the curriculum.

In addition, REAL Success integrates technology expected by today's youth. Jamestown Reading Navigator can be used on any computer, whether at school, at an after-school program, at home, or at a library. With the Jamestown Reading Navigator Online Learning environment, students receive direct, explicit instruction targeted to their individual reading level and learning needs.

Reading Strategies Grounded in Research

REAL Success programs align with the latest recommendations from the National Reading Panel as published in Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children as well as the Reading Next report from the Alliance for Excellent Education and Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Reading Next report cites 15 key elements of effective adolescent literacy programs:

  -- Direct, explicit comprehension instruction
-- Effective instructional principles embedded in content
  -- Motivation and self-directed learning
  -- Text-based collaborative learning
  -- Strategic tutoring
  -- Diverse texts
  -- Intensive writing
  -- A technology component
  -- Ongoing formative assessment
  -- Extended time for literacy
  -- Professional development
  -- Ongoing summative assessment
  -- Teacher teams
  -- Leadership
-- A comprehensive and coordinated literacy program
