McGraw-Hill Higher Education, a leading global provider of higher education materials, and eInstruction Corporation, a global leader in interactive response pad technology, are offering instructional technology grants to colleges of education nationwide. The grants enable these schools to study the use of technology tools that enhance formative assessment.
The grants provide instructors with unlimited use of a wireless Classroom Performance System (CPS), which includes 32 student response pads and an instructor's transmitter. The grant recipients are also offered training on how to use the CPS.
With the CPS transmitter from the front of the lecture hall, an instructor can take attendance, administer tests and quizzes, and gauge individual and overall student comprehension of the subject. Students respond to the instructor's queries using their own keypads. CPS provides instructors and students with immediate feedback from the entire class, helping instructors tailor a lesson to the needs of the classroom, a major component of formative assessment.
Fifteen schools were awarded the grant in 2005, and 17 additional grants are being offered this year. Grant-assisted instructional research that began in 2005 demonstrated a strong relationship between the CPS technology, formative assessment and student success. Research from the grant recipients will be used to make updates to future versions of the CPS and other tools offered to Grades K-12 and higher education institutions.
"We believe that combining rich content with the best technology significantly enhances teaching and learning," said Steve Debow, president, Humanities, Social Sciences and World Languages, McGraw-Hill Higher Education. "The information and insight generated by these grants will help enhance instructor effectiveness and student performance."
"Our CPS system offers hands-on teaching and learning opportunities that are invaluable to schools of education," said Darrell Ward, president and CEO of eInstruction. "Instructors benefit by seeing first-hand how present and future students can learn in this manner. Students benefit from the state-of-the-art technology that gauges their comprehension. This technology truly represents a win-win situation."
