This month, SRA/McGraw-Hill, a leading elementary education publisher, launches SRA Real Math, a research- based, standards-based Pre-K-6 mathematics program that combines instruction in basic skills, conceptual understanding, and real-life problem solving to help many types of learners understand and enjoy math.
"Reports show that we have not prepared our students in the U.S. to be proficient in math when compared to students worldwide," said SRA/McGraw-Hill Vice President of Marketing John McHale. "Real Math represents a real advance in the way math is taught and learned. We are so proud of the instructional philosophy of this program. Real Math doesn't just require calculation and memorization. It helps students understand math. With this understanding, children are better prepared for tests. But beyond even testing, when children internalize math concepts, they can apply what they know to the real world."
Real Math is the first mathematics program to provide a fully integrated- suite of technology tools to deliver motivating and rich math instruction. This ranges from engaging math games, to an online student textbook, to online assessment and planning, to a research-based activity center that corresponds to each individual student's learning style.
Real Math is the first program to incorporate the latest in research on how children learn math. The program fully incorporates the five key strands of mathematical proficiency in every lesson: understanding, computing, applying, reasoning, and engaging. Based on more than 30 years of classroom experience, field testing, and research, Real Math is a fresh, new program that benefits from a solid pedagogy and background.
In addition, the program includes built-in assessment to monitor student progress, a variety of opportunities to differentiate instruction to reach each student, and online professional development to support teachers.
"Real Math was designed to be rigorous, yet accessible. It can be used by teachers with any background in math," said Joan Moss, Ph.D. and co-author of the program.
