The first official TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test) test prep book will be published by McGraw-Hill Professional this fall. THE OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE NEW TOEFL® iBT was developed by ETS (Educational Testing Service), the creators of the revamped test.

The TOEFL test is used by more than 5200 colleges and universities in 90 countries, including virtually all institutions in the U.S., Canada, and universities worldwide where English is spoken. It is used primarily to make decisions about the ability of students whose first language is not English to communicate in an academic setting. Approximately 750,000 students around the world take the test annually. The new version of the test, which was introduced on September 24 in the U.S. and will be phased in worldwide over the next year, includes some key improvements that better measure how well students can communicate in an academic setting. The biggest changes are the new speaking component to the test and the focus on measuring how well students read, listen, write and speak in combination.

McGraw-Hill Professional will introduce the first and only official guide to this new test, reflecting the recent improvements. THE OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE NEW TOEFL(r) iBT, which will sell for $30, contains:

-- Actual TOEFL questions for practice
-- Detailed explanations of what is being tested in each section and how
     each section is structured
-- Detailed information about the Speaking and Writing sections, with
scoring information, real student responses and actual raters'
     comments.
-- A companion audio CD with authentic TOEFL listening passages and
     students' spoken responses
-- In-depth descriptions of the multiple-choice Listening and Reading
questions -- with valuable tips for answering them

"The TOEFL iBT assesses students' ability to use English to learn," explains Mari Pearlman, Senior Vice President of ETS's Higher Education Division. "The key to success on the test is to understand the language skills and combinations of skills that are used in academic environments, how the test measures those skills, and what individuals can do to strengthen them. THE OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE NEW TOEFL® iBT not only provides students with authentic practice, but, perhaps more importantly, it explains the structure of TOEFL iBT questions and the underlying skills needed to answer them."

"As a leader in global education, we are pleased to partner with ETS to help students around the world prepare for the TOEFL test by providing expert advice on how to integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that are critical to success on the test," says Philip Ruppel, vice president and group publisher of McGraw-Hill Professional.

"This new book underscores our commitment to help to raise student achievement at all levels by providing authoritative test prep and study guides for key areas of study," says Keith Fox, president of McGraw-Hill Professional.
