McGraw-Hill Education, the premier provider of teaching and learning solutions, today announced that it has appointed Carlos A. Garcia, superintendent of the Clark County, Nev., School District, as vice president of National Urban Markets. Mr. Garcia, following the completion of his duties in Clark County, will join the McGraw-Hill Education team in mid-July.

The appointment strengthens McGraw-Hill Education's focus on helping large school districts improve student performance through excellence in instruction, curriculum and assessment. Mr. Garcia, with more than 30 years of experience in education, has devoted his career to understanding the needs of administrators, teachers and students in large districts. Effective instruction for non-English speaking students has been a particular focus. He will report to Dan Domenech, senior vice president, National Urban Markets.

"Having walked in the shoes of teachers and administrators, Carlos understands first hand the challenges they face in helping students reach their fullest potential. Working with all McGraw-Hill Education divisions, he will play a key role in our effort to help districts identify solutions that improve student achievement," said William Oldsey, executive vice president, McGraw-Hill Education.

Since 2000, Mr. Garcia has served as superintendent of Clark County, the nation's fifth largest school district with 300 schools and more than 280,000 students. Under his direction, the district greatly improved mathematics and reading instruction, enhanced kindergarten programs, and tripled the number of students taking advanced placement courses. He also helped unite Nevada's 17 county school districts in an effort that led to greater educational funding throughout the state. In California, Mr. Garcia served as superintendent of the Fresno Unified School District from 1997 to 2000 and the Sanger Unified School District from 1994 to 1997. In addition, he was a principal and teacher in several California districts, including San Francisco, Watsonville, Ontario, and La Puente.

Mr. Garcia was named the 2005 Nevada Superintendent of the Year by the Nevada Association of School Administrators, and has been recognized on numerous occasions for his educational reforms and other accomplishments. He is also past president of the California Latino Superintendents Association and past chairman of the executive committee of the Council of Great City Schools.
