To support student participation in the voting process, McGraw-Hill Higher Education (MHHE) online learning sites have added a direct link to Project Vote Smart, http://www.vote-smart.org/ , an independent, nonpartisan, citizen's organization that provides cost free state-by-state voter registration information.
The voter registration initiative was inspired by Professor Thomas E. Patterson of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and the author of two McGraw-Hill American government titles, We the People and The American Democracy. According to Professor Patterson, research shows that citizens stand a good chance of never voting if they do not vote in one of the first two or three presidential elections of their eligibility.
"Our commitment to education includes supporting efforts that encourage students to be active and informed participants in their community," said Ed Stanford, president of McGraw-Hill Higher Education. "The voter registration notices are designed to remind students about the importance of exercising their right to vote as they prepare for their future lives and careers."
Thousands of students visit MHHE Online Learning Center (OLC) sites every day to access course websites customized by professors to offer interactive exercises that blend real world coverage with graphics, video and self-grading online assessment tools. Each OLC site is correlated to McGraw-Hill textbooks chapter-by-chapter. The voter registration reminders appear on the OLC websites across several disciplines including: Political Science; History; Psychology; English; World Languages; Sociology; Anthropology; Communications, and Criminal Justice. To view the vote registration notices visit: http://www.mhhe.com/pattersonwtp5 .
