McGraw-Hill Education has partnered with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in the largest service project in the Association's history that includes the donation of more than 2,000 McGraw-Hill Education books to the New Orleans school system. The donated books include both fiction and nonfiction titles -- a perfect addition to classroom and school libraries.
In celebration of literacy, both organizations will host the first-ever "Books on the Bayou Bash" reception at the New Orleans Convention Center tomorrow from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Morial Convention Center. McGraw-Hill Education's book donation will support New Orleans school district's efforts to improve literacy among its 69,000 students in 119 schools. Books were donated by four divisions within McGraw-Hill Education: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill; Macmillan/McGraw-Hill; SRA/McGraw-Hill; and Wright Group/McGraw-Hill.
District Superintendent Anthony "Tony" Amato will attend the ASCD celebration to accept the donation presented by McGraw-Hill Education Senior Vice President of National Urban Markets, Dr. Daniel A. Domenech.
"Reading skills are essential to learning development and have a direct impact on a child's continued success," said Amato. "Having up-to-date, quality reading materials in the classroom is another way to encourage a child's interest, get them reading and build the foundation for a lifetime of learning."
"We share ASCD's mission of improving learning for all students and we are pleased to co-host this special event for educators who are on the front line of making a difference in the classroom," said Domenech. "McGraw-Hill Education is committed to helping educators improve learning and we are proud to offer these books to support literacy and the reading improvement of the children of New Orleans."
"The book donation benefiting New Orleans Public Schools represents a commitment to this diverse, urban school system and highlights our shared vision to improve education and learning," said Dr. Gene Carter, executive director of ASCD.
At the reception, each of the anticipated 4,000 educators will be asked to donate one book toward the literacy cause. For attendees who do not bring their own book, McGraw-Hill Education will "sell" books for $1 each and donate all financial proceeds to a local literacy organization, YMCA Educational Services (YES!).
