CTB/McGraw-Hill, the nation's leading provider of assessment solutions, today announced that it has expanded its award-winning Fox in a Box™ literacy assessment system to Grade 3. The Fox in a Box system helps educators screen, diagnose, monitor progress and evaluate assessment outcomes as required in the Reading First provisions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

Fox in a Box is an effective reading diagnostic tool for Grades K-3 that builds on the five essential literacy skills-phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Using one-on-one and group literacy activities that incorporate a fox puppet to engage a child's interest, Fox in a Box helps teachers determine whether children are achieving set benchmarks for each grade. Currently, Fox in a Box is helping students in more than 700 schools and districts in 34 states reach literacy goals.

"Fox in a Box provides the right diagnostic information at the right time. It helps diagnose literacy skills at an early age, which is the critical stage in reading development," said David Taggart, president of CTB/McGraw-Hill. "With Fox in a Box, teachers have a complete solution for developing the early language and pre-reading skills young readers need to succeed."

Enhancements to CTB's Fox in a Box include:

   * The Fox e-Management and Reporting System Software. Fox e-Management
helps educators report, aggregate and archive each student's literacy
progress in Grades K-3. Student results can be entered on a personal
computer or by scan sheet. Educators can use student data to generate
multiple reports for class, grade, school, district and state-level
needs. Individualized home reports that include parent-child reading
     activities are also available.

   * Adventures in Literacy: Classroom and Home Activities for Early
Readers. Learning activities are tied directly to assessment results
with this classroom or home use tool. The illustrated book includes
fun learning activities for a teacher or parent to help young readers
     from Pre-K to Grade 3.

   * Letting the Fox Out of the Box Training CD. This professional
development resource contains a complete training module for
implementing the Fox in a Box program. It includes presentation
slides, videos, hands-on practice sessions, handouts, scripts for
     training and speaker preparation notes.

   * Fox in a Box Short Form. To meet targeted needs, the short form
contains approximately one-third fewer activities than the regular
version of the Fox assessment, yet maintains the integrity and strong
research base of the original Fox in a Box.
