McGraw-Hill Education, the premier provider of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade teaching and learning solutions, today announced it has appointed Dr. Daniel A. Domenech, superintendent of Fairfax County, Va. Schools, to a newly created position -- Senior Vice President of National Urban Markets. After leaving his current post in March, Dr. Domenech will lead McGraw-Hill Education's efforts to meet the growing and evolving needs of large urban school districts, particularly in light of the increased accountability requirements of the No Child Left Behind law.

"With over 34 years of experience as a public school educator and administrator, Dan has a unique understanding of the challenges facing urban educators. His expertise and leadership skills will enable him to play a leading role in McGraw-Hill Education's effort to help improve the quality of urban education nationwide," said Henry Hirschberg, president of McGraw-Hill Education.

Specifically, Dr. Domenech will work with all divisions of McGraw-Hill Education to assist large districts in improving student performance through excellence in instruction, curriculum, and assessment. Effective March 8, 2004, Dr. Domenech will report to William Oldsey, executive vice president of McGraw-Hill Education, who heads its pre-K through 12th grade operations.

Throughout his career, Dr. Domenech has successfully implemented educational reforms, emphasizing his belief that children from diverse backgrounds and all socioeconomic levels can learn complex concepts if given the time and presented with the correct approach. In addition, his strategies have led to significant growth in student achievement and greater funding support for public schools.

As Superintendent of Fairfax County Schools since 1998, Dr. Domenech initiated a 21st Century Schools plan to raise the bar for academic excellence and increased accountability at both staff and student achievement levels. In addition, he is a past president of the American Association of School Administrators and has held several educational leadership roles in New York, including: District Superintendent of the Secondary Supervisory District of Suffolk County and Chief Executive Officer of the Western Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services; Superintendent of Schools for the South Huntington School District in Long Island; and Superintendent of Schools for Deer Park Schools in Long Island.

Dr. Domenech, who emigrated from Cuba at the age of nine, began his education career as a sixth grade teacher in Queens, New York, where he introduced multilingual/multicultural classes. He has a Ph.D. in Education Research from Hofstra University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hunter College.
